How to Create an SEO Blog Post From Start to Finish

When it comes to content marketing, you might be wondering if blogging is worth it in 2026. The answer is yes! When you write SEO blog posts and write them with your ideal client in mind, blogging is still one of the most powerful ways to get found online and grow your business. 

That’s because a well-optimized blog post does so much more than fill space on your website. It helps more dream clients find you (at the exact moment they’re searching for the kind of support you offer!) SEO blog posts bring in organic traffic, build trust and credibility, and support all your other marketing efforts.

The key is you need a plan for blogging SEO. In this post, we’ll walk you through how to optimize blog posts for SEO from start to finish. Let’s go! 

How to write SEO blog posts

Step 1: Choose a blog topic based on search intent

Before you write a single word, you need to know why you’re writing (and more importantly, what your ideal client is typing into Google to find it.)

The goal is to find that sweet spot between what they’re searching (aka search intent) for and what you actually offer. You want your blog post to be the helpful, relevant answer to a real question a potential client is already asking. 

You can find these a few different ways:

  • Use Google autocomplete. Start typing a phrase and see what pops up
  • Explore the “People Also Ask” section of search results
  • Try keyword tools like Ubersuggest to search for specific phrases and get ideas on related phrases

Pro tip! These questions are usually beginner-friendly topics or early-stage buyer concerns – the kind you’ve probably already answered in your DMs or consult calls a dozen times!

Examples:

  • Interior Designers:
    “How to choose paint colors for small spaces”
    “What’s the difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator?”
  • Travel Agents:
    “Best European destinations for solo travelers”
    “Should I use a travel agent or book online?”

Step 2: Do some keyword research for blogging SEO

Now that you’ve got your topic, it’s time to figure out how people are searching for it.

Your goal here is to choose:

  • 1 primary keyword (this is your main search phrase)
  • 2–3 secondary keywords (related terms and variations)

These keywords should reflect how real people describe what they’re looking for (not industry jargon.) 


Think:
✅ “best paint colors for small rooms”
🚫 “interior spatial color optimization”

 

Focus on long-tail keywords (phrases with 4+ words) that show intent. These are less competitive, more specific, and more likely to convert. For example:

  • “Italy trip for couples”
  • “affordable home office makeover ideas”
  • “how to plan a Disney vacation with kids”

Where your keywords should go in search engine optimization blogs:

  • In your title
  • In your meta description
  • Within the first 100 words of your post
  • In at least one subheading (H2 or H3)
  • In the URL slug
  • Sprinkled (naturally!) throughout the body

Don’t force keywords! Google’s smarter than that now. Instead, use them where they make sense and flow with your writing. If you’re solving a real and relevant problem for your ideal client, chances are you’ll use those keywords without even trying too hard.

Step 3: Write an SEO friendly blog title that drives clicks

Your blog title is the first impression, both for your reader and for Google. It needs to do three things:

  1. Use your primary keyword
  2. Make the value clear to readers
  3. Spark curiosity (without being clickbait)

Here are some proven formats that work beautifully for service providers:

  • How-To:
    “How to Choose the Right Paint Color for a Small Bedroom”
  • Listicles:
    “7 Italy Travel Mistakes to Avoid (and What to Do Instead)”
  • Problem-Solution:
    “Struggling with Travel Planning? Here’s How to Simplify the Process”
  • Location-Based:
    “Best Kitchen Remodel Tips for Raleigh Homeowners”
  • Time-Sensitive:
    “Top 2025 Interior Design Trends You’ll Actually Want in Your Home”

Tips to keep in mind:

  • Keep it under 60 characters so it doesn’t get cut off in search results
  • Use actionable language like “Plan,” “Avoid,” “Transform,” “Design,” etc.
  • Speak to a specific person or pain point (vagueness is the enemy of good SEO)

If you’re ever stuck, write 5–10 title options. Let them sit. Pick the one that would make you click.

 

Step 4: Outline before you write (trust us!)

Want to know how to write SEO friendly blog posts? Outline them! It will keep you focused, organized, and make your blog easy to skim (which readers and search engines love!) 

Here’s a solid structure that works for most SEO blog posts:

Introduction (1–2 short paragraphs)

  • Hook your reader with a relatable scenario or bold statement
  • Preview what they’ll learn in the post
  • Naturally work in your primary keyword

Body Section: 3–5 Main Points (Each with an H2)

Each main section should:

  • Cover one clear idea
  • Support your main keyword and goal
  • Include secondary keywords if they fit naturally

Pro Tip! Break up longer sections with H3s (subpoints or examples), bulleted lists, and pull quotes to keep things scannable.

Conclusion (1 paragraph)

  • Summarize the value of the post
  • Reinforce the takeaway
  • Lead into your CTA (call to action)

Step 5: Write for humans, optimize for search engines

This is where the SEO for blog posts magic happens (but it’s also where things can get a little robotic if you’re not careful.) Yes, we’re optimizing for search engines. But more importantly? We’re writing for real people who are actually going to hire you, book with you, or share your post. Here are some tips for striking that balance:

Use a conversational tone

Just be yourself! If you’re warm and personable in real life, don’t switch over to a super-formal persona when you blog. Just think of it like a conversation with a client (you can even use voice-to-text tools to dictate your blog if that helps!)

Write clear, short paragraphs

Stick to two to four sentences per paragraph, and be generators with subheadings and bullet points. 

Use plenty of links

Internal links guide people to other helpful content on your site (like service pages, blog posts, or freebies.)

External links point to credible sources and show search engines you’ve done your homework.

Sprinkle keywords throughout your post naturally

I know sometimes that sounds easier than it feels, so here’s a quick list of where you should use your primary keyword to boost your SEO:

  • Introduction
  • One or two H2s
  • Meta title and description
  • URL slug (more on that soon)

Give everything a proofread

Or you can run it through a tool like Hemingway or Grammarly to tighten things up, catch passive voice, and brush up your grammar before hitting publish. 

Step 6: Add SEO-boosting extras

Once you’ve written a killer blog post, it’s time to give it the extra polish that helps it rank higher, load faster, and look great in search results.

Here’s your checklist of must-do SEO extras before you hit publish:

Meta Title + Meta Description

  • Meta title: This is the title that shows up in Google search results. Keep it under 60 characters and include your primary keyword.
  • Meta description: This short blurb (under 160 characters) should entice someone to click and include your keyword. Think of it like a teaser trailer for your blog post.

Pro tip! Use a plugin like RankMath to easily edit these in WordPress.

Use an SEO-friendly URL

Instead of something messy like:
yourwebsite.com/blog/?p=123

Use a clean, keyword-based slug like:
yourwebsite.com/blog/how-to-write-seo-friendly-blog-posts

Optimize Your Images

  • Compress images to keep your page loading fast (we love TinyPNG for this).
  • Rename image files to something relevant (e.g., seo-blog-post-tips.jpg).
  • Add alt text that describes the image and, where relevant, includes a keyword. This improves accessibility and gives search engines more context.

Add Internal Links Strategically

Link to related blog posts or your services page wherever it naturally fits. This helps guide your readers and tells search engines which pages are most important.

Make Sure It’s Mobile-Friendly

Most of your readers will be on their phones, so your blog should load quickly and be easy to read on mobile

Step 7: Include a call to action that aligns with your goals

Every blog post should guide your reader to the next step—because even the best content is a dead end without a clear call to action (CTA).

Think about what makes the most sense based on the topic and your business goals:

  • Want more leads? Invite them to book a free consultation.
  • Growing your email list? Offer a downloadable freebie related to the blog.
  • Boosting authority? Direct them to read a related post or explore your portfolio.

Here’s how that might look in real life:

  • Interior designer blogging about paint colors? → “Download our free Paint Color Planning Guide”
  • Travel agent blogging about Italy trips? → “Get your custom Italy itinerary”
  • Brand photographer blogging about brand shoot prep? → “Book a free discovery call to talk about your shoot”

A great CTA feels like a natural extension of the post, not a hard sell. And if someone’s made it to the bottom of your blog? They’re already interested, so give them somewhere to go next.
